Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is that every student deserves a prime education that allows them to prosper in and outside of academics, despite their economic or ethnic background. Fundamental to my philosophy is my awareness of the disparities within the U.S. school system and the concepts of growth mindset and constructivism.

As low-socioeconomic individuals and or minorities in America we experience many barriers that prevent us from receiving the same education as our more economically advantaged or anglo counterparts. For instance, the inability to have our education enriched at home because our parents aren’t home, don’t understand what we’re learning, or have other duties. Unfortunately, there is low student engagement in these children because the education system does not know how to target their natural desire to learn and fails to provide them with adequate guidance and tools to do so. Therefore, my goal as an educator is to accentuate the natural motivation students have to learn and provide my students with mindsets and techniques that will aid them in the process of taking charge of their learning.

In order to meet this goal, I want to create an academically challenging classroom environment where students feel comfortable sharing their opinions, ideas, and methods. To do so, I want my students to understand that their different backgrounds and experiences bring different perspectives or ways of thinking and that collaborating with one another is valuable to the learning experience. They will spend most of their time working together exploring content or solving problems and therefore learning from one another. I also want to emphasize that the amount of knowledge they uptake is dependent on how much effort they are willing to allocate to their learning and growth. Aside from these mindset changes, I hope to be able to provide my students with transferable skills through engaging in project-based or inquiry-based activities. Whether that be learning how to write a paper in MLA format, conducting research, studying techniques, or communication skills, etc.

Ultimately, I aim to make a difference in the way students think about themselves as scholars and help them grow both academically and personally.
